Email Delivery Issues

Troubleshoot common email delivery problems.

Emails Not Being Received

Check These First

  1. Spam/Junk folder - Ask subscribers to check spam
  2. Email address - Verify the subscriber email is correct
  3. Subscription status - Ensure they're subscribed (not unsubscribed)
  4. Send status - Confirm the issue was actually sent

Check Delivery Status

  1. Go to your sent issue
  2. Click "View Analytics"
  3. Look for the specific subscriber
  4. Check their delivery status
Status Meaning Action
Delivered Email accepted by recipient's server Check spam folder
Bounced Email rejected See bounce reasons below
Deferred Temporarily delayed Will retry automatically
Complained Marked as spam Subscriber auto-unsubscribed

Bounce Types

Hard Bounces

Permanent delivery failures:

  • Invalid email - Address doesn't exist
  • Domain not found - Domain doesn't exist
  • Blocked - Recipient server rejected permanently
Action: Hard bounces are automatically unsubscribed to protect your sender reputation.

Soft Bounces

Temporary delivery failures:

  • Mailbox full - Recipient's inbox is full
  • Server down - Temporary server issue
  • Message too large - Email exceeded size limit

Soft bounces are retried automatically.

Going to Spam

Common Causes

  • Spammy subject lines (all caps, excessive punctuation)
  • Too many links or images
  • Missing unsubscribe link
  • Poor sender reputation
  • No email authentication (SPF/DKIM)

How to Fix

  1. Set up custom domain with proper authentication
  2. Ask subscribers to add you to contacts
  3. Clean your list regularly (remove bounces)
  4. Write quality content that people want to read
  5. Maintain good engagement rates

Low Open Rates

If opens seem unusually low:

  • Some email clients block tracking - Actual opens may be higher
  • Check subject lines - A/B test different approaches
  • Send time - Experiment with different days/times
  • List quality - Older lists may have inactive emails

When to Contact Support

Reach out if:

  • Delivery rates drop suddenly
  • Large number of bounces from one domain
  • Consistent spam folder placement
  • Analytics not updating
