A/B Testing
Test different subject lines to optimize your open rates.
Paid Feature: A/B testing is available on paid newsletter plans.
What is A/B Testing?
A/B testing (also called split testing) lets you compare two subject lines to see which performs better. DailyDraft sends each version to a portion of your list, then sends the winner to everyone else.
How It Works
- Create variants - Write 2 different subject lines
- Test group - Each variant goes to 15% of subscribers
- Wait period - System waits 2-4 hours for results
- Winner selected - Higher open rate wins
- Full send - Winner goes to remaining 70%
Setting Up an A/B Test
- Open your issue for editing
- Click "A/B Test Subject"
- Enter your primary subject line (Version A)
- Enter alternative subject line (Version B)
- Click "Send with A/B Test"

A/B Test Settings
| Setting | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Test Size | 15% | Percentage for each variant |
| Wait Time | 4 hours | Time before selecting winner |
| Winning Metric | Open Rate | How winner is determined |
Viewing Results
After the test completes, see results in your issue analytics:
- Open rate for each variant
- Which version won
- Statistical significance
- Final send metrics
Best Practices
Test one thing at a time: Change only the subject line between variants. This ensures you know what caused the difference.
Good A/B Test Ideas
- Length - Short vs. detailed subject
- Personalization - With name vs. without
- Urgency - Time-sensitive vs. evergreen
- Question vs. Statement
- Emoji vs. No Emoji
Minimum List Size
A/B testing works best with 1,000+ subscribers. Smaller lists may not have statistically significant results.
